Leather embroidery by Erin Fletcher

The second Standards talk was given by bookbinder Erin Fletcher, who is well known for her embroideries on leather. Like me, Erin came to bookbinding after graduating from college.

However, she took the full-time Bookbinding program at the North Benneth Street School, a bookbinding specialty school located in Boston.

Erin teaches different courses in bookbinding, conservation and box making in various institutions, and founded Herringbone Bindery in 2012.

During her talk, she was showing various historical books that had embroidery. I think it was very important to see them and understand that the use of embroidery is not something new, but rather that it has been present for centuries, hand in hand with the world of bookbinding.

In addition, she did a live demonstration where she was embroidering on leather, a job that characterizes her as a bookbinder. She also gave us pointers on the most commonly used stitches, and taught us how to work with the material for optimal results.

I was very attracted to her work precisely because, a few months ago, I had learned about machine made embroidery on leather in a workshop in Montreal. You can read more about that in this post.

I liked being able to make this connection and expand my mental toolbox with everything that can be achieved within my profession.
