Standards 2022 opened with a talk by Béatrice Coron. And although the theme of this artist was to cut paper, there was a sub-theme within all the talk, that was about taking risks, enjoying life, and above all, being a little rebellious.
Béatrice is a well respected plastic artist, despite not having studied art at a university. She explained that after 1 year of being at the Lyon School of Fine Arts, she realized that this type of teaching and structure was not for her. Therefore, she decided to leave the university and began her path of exploration, much in her own terms. She has lived in various countries (China, Mexico, and Egypt) and has also held various jobs as a truck driver, pastor, cleaning lady, and tour guide in New York (where she now resides).
His English has a predominant accent, which gives away his French nationality. It is impossible to stop smiling when listening to her speak and seeing how her eyes shine when she expatiates on art and paper. The best thing is that she does in a non-ceremonious way, it is rather very welcoming.
Among the topics that she touches during her talk, she comments that it was after 8 years of attempts that she managed to win one of the public art contests, where her cuttings went from being on paper to being transferred to metal and becoming part of the city of NY.
In the audience they ask her what does she do if she makes a mistake? To which she comments that she always works in multiples for that reason, she cuts 3 to 4 pieces at a time, but that her mistakes are almost never irremediable.
Here I leave you a TED talk she did a while ago, where you can see more of her and her art.
